Who—is that your closest friend—or a monstrous imitation, breed of an alien, deadly world? WHO GOES THERE——?

Written by John Wood Campbell Jr. and published under the pseudonym Don A. Stuart, this 20,000+ word novella was originally published in the August 1938 issue of Astounding Science-Fiction magazine, also known as Astounding Stories of Super-Science, and Analog Science Fiction and Fact.

It entered the public domain when the copyright was not renewed, and was the basis for first the 1951 movie "The Thing From Another World", and more recently and famously, "The Thing" from 1982.

This real text version of the story was transcribed from a PDF scan of the original 1938 magazine to make it more accessible to everyone. It is in the public domain, meaning you can use this document, and the story it contains, in any way you want, just like the creators of the much more famous 1982 movie did.
